Birds of the flowers:  How Colombian flower farms create biodiversity havens

By 15 October, 2024No Comments

Flowers of Colombia are renowned for their diversity of varieties, rich colors, enchanting fragrances, and delicate petals. But there is an aspect of their beauty that often goes unnoticed: the abundant birdlife thriving among them. Beyond cultivating stunning blooms, flower farms in Colombia are also sanctuaries where birds find shelter and coexist with the flowers.

Colombian flower growers, through their commitment to sustainable practices, have transformed their farms into safe havens for a wide range of bird species. This harmonious relationship is showcased in the updated study, “The Birds of Flowers,” conducted by Asocolflores, Florverde Sustainable Flowers, and the Bogotá Ornithology Association (ABO).

The study explores how sustainable practices in flower farms provide essential habitats that also embraces biodiversity.

A sanctuary among flowers.

Recent surveys on 28 flower farms in the regions of Cundinamarca and Antioquia reveal that these areas serve as habitats for a wide range of bird species—from delicate hummingbirds and cheerful songbirds to rare species like the Bogota Rail. The presence of these birds brings an extraordinary dimension to the farms; their plumage and melodic calls create a living, breathing environment that amplifies the natural charm and calm of the flowers.

The last study was conducted in 2010 documented 143 different species, compared to this one in 2024 where they found 210 different species in Cundinamarca and Antioquia including some endangered ones, underscoring the critical role these farms play in supporting avian species at risk. This important finding highlights that flower farms are more than places for growing flowers—they are vital ecosystems where nature and agriculture coexist in perfect harmony. The farms contribute to the recovery of bird populations threatened by habitat loss, offering a hopeful vision of how human industry and natural environments can thrive together.

Cultivating sustainable ecosystems.

This study is just one aspect of a broader initiative aimed at demonstrating how flower farms in Colombia are committed to both high-quality flower production and environmental conservation. Through practices like integrated pest management, water conservation, and soil health improvement, these farms create a model for how agricultural practices can be both profitable and environmentally responsible. The result is a flourishing ecosystem where every bloom and every bird represent a small triumph of sustainability.

In 2010, the first edition of “The Birds of Flowers” identified 143 bird species, including migratory birds that journey thousands of miles from Canada and the United States to Colombia, and rare, endangered species. The findings demonstrated how flower farms contribute to the conservation of species facing extinction threats. The new version of the study aims to deepen this understanding by capturing changes in bird populations and habitats, reinforcing the positive impact of sustainable farming practices over the past 14 years.
